Lamar's softball team is headed in the right direction to defend last year’s District 20-5A championship.
The Redskins shutout Westside, 10-0, Wednesday at Butler for their second district win. Lamar is 2-0 in the district and 4-4-1 overall.
Senior pitcher Kelsey Goodwin started for Lamar and demonstrated she can lead this team to another district title.
“She is doing a great job,” first-year Lamar coach Brenna Guthrie said. “We are looking for leadership from her. We want her to move the ball around and do what she needs to do to get the job done.”
Goodwin contributed 11 strikeouts in Wednesday’s win.
The Redskins had a big second inning, scoring four runs. With the bases loaded and one out, a sac fly to right field scored Lamar’s first run. Leadoff batter Sydney Mafrige got a single to score two more runs and a double ended Lamar’s scoring for a 4-0 lead.
Lamar scored two more runs in the top of the fourth as Mafrige singled to center. She quickly advanced to third for bases loaded and another double scored two more runs for a 6-0 lead.
Westside was hitless through the fourth until Margaret Lee singled to right field. The Wolves couldn’t get anything going and ended the inning.
The Redskins scored their last four runs in the sixth and seventh innings by making contact and forcing errors.
“We are starting to step up to the plate and be very selective with pitches,” Guthrie said. “We’re hitting the ball hard and getting on base and then we are following with more hits.”
