Roubique guides Cy-Fair to second straight state appearance

Cy-Fair’s girls basketball team is heading into the state tournament well trained, strong-minded and prepared, and it’s because of Ann Roubique.

Roubique came to Cy-Fair 18 years ago and has led the Bobcats to two state tournaments.

“She is very passionate about what she does,” senior guard Mansa El said. “She knows what she wants and she usually gets what she wants.”

But after losing the championship last year, Roubique returned this year and coached the team back to the state tournament.

“She’s hard working, determined, and she pushes us everyday,” Nicole Morris said. “Even on game days, she still pushes us and tries to keep us focused.”

Roubique moved to Houston from Baton Rouge, La. After high school, she attended McNeese State University in Lake Charles, where she majored in physical education.

As a point guard for McNeese State, Roubique saw her share of post-seasons in NAIA and NCAA.

But basketball wasn’t her only sport; she also played softball. As a catcher on the field and a point guard on the court, Roubique always has been a leader.

“She is very strong willed,” El said.

Since joining the Bobcats, Roubique has found a family and has no plans of moving elsewhere.

“They haven’t run me back across the river yet, so that’s good,” laughs Roubique.

“She can be goofy at times,” Morris said. “But she is also very tough.”

Roubique says her players are good kids, not just on the court because that is apparent she says, but off the court as well. She has coached some top players that have signed with Texas A&M, University of Louisiana-Lafayette and Stanford among other major schools.

The Bobcats have looked to Roubique for 18 years to guide them to a championship and this is the year she could deliver.
