On a chilly Monday evening, Katy hosted Mayde Creek in a District 18-5A softball game. The Tigers jumped to an early lead and defeated Mayde Creek 7-3.
The Tigers (16-3, 2-0) started off strong, scoring 1 run at their first at bat. Taran Tyler got to first on an error. She stole second and then third before Matte Haack squeezed her in.
“We have some speed on the bases and that got us some runs with squeezes and steals,” Katy coach Kalum Haack said.
Mayde Creek tied the Tigers in the top of the third after a single and a double.
Katy jumped ahead with two runs in the bottom of the third.
Tyler got on and then stole second. Tyler advanced to third on another error. Holly Holl squeezed in Tyler and an error on Mayde Creek allowed Katy to score again.
“We found ways to score early because we weren’t hitting the ball that well,” Haack said. “And because we weren’t hitting the ball that well, we went to the short game and caused them to make a few mistakes.”
Then to end the inning, Mayde Creek second baseman Alycia Rodriguez got a double play to get out of a bases loaded situation.
The Tigers scored another two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler started a Tiger rally, and then with the bases loaded, Mellissa Herman hit a stand-up double to score two runs for a 5-1 lead.
Mayde Creek showed some life in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs. After a walk, a bunt, and two errors, the Rams scored their first run of the inning. With a runner on third, a base hit scored the runner and the Rams trailed by two.
“We had one inning where we didn’t play very well but we’ll work on that,” Haack said. “When you have a four-run lead and you make a couple of mistakes, it’s not as bad.”
Katy finished the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. Tyler and Holl scored after two hits and a sac bunt moved them around the bases. The Tigers won 7-3.
“We are getting a little better each ball game,” Haack said.
The Tigers’ three losses have come from tournaments. They lost to Montgomery once and Klein Oak twice.
