After a two-day postponement, Cinco Ranch and Mayde Creek's girls soccer team finally played their District 18-5A game. The Cougars came out firing in the first half, scoring two goals and one in the second to win 3-0.
“I was a little concerned because it’s Wednesday and we should have played on Monday,” Cinco Ranch coach Amy Pettibone said. “We had TAKS (testing) today and the seniors didn’t have to come in until noon. But they came out and had a good night.”
Indeed. Cinco Ranch came into this game with one goal in mind; get a shutout. The last time Cinco Ranch and Mayde Creek faced each other, the Cougars won 4-1.
“Last time we played Mayde Creek, they scored a goal on us, and our goal this game was to get the shutout,” Pettibone said.
In the 18th minute, Kaitlyn Edison shot a goal from the top right of the box. Closely following Edison was Hannah Dismuke, on a corner kick that hooked right into the net, in the 22nd minute.
Missy Wentz scored the Cougars’ final goal in the second half.
Although Wentz is a sophomore, Edison and Dismuke are two of eight seniors on the team. They are the leading force behind Cinco Ranch’s 17-2-3 record.
“We have a very experienced team,” Pettibone said. “The sky is the limit for this group. Tonight was senior night and we have eight tremendous seniors. So this win was a good way to honor them.”
