In something of an early-season upset, the Spring Woods softball team defeated visiting Stratford 3-2 Saturday in a District 19-5A game.

The Tigers took the field as the underdog with something to prove.

“Coming in we had nothing to lose and everything to gain,” Tigers pitcher Rachel Heidemann said. “We had to show them that we are just as good as they are.”

In the bottom of the forth, the Spartans narrowly escaped a perfect scoring opportunity for Spring Woods.

With the game tied at two, bases loaded, and two outs, Amanda Sunderland hit a pop fly which was caught by shorstop Rachel Darrough to end the inning.

But Spring Woods broke through in the fifth.

Catcher Kristina Riley singled up the middle. Shortstop Kathryn Fields followed by bunting her way to first and Heidemann. Then Sarah Smith sacrificed Riley in.

The Spartans just weren’t able to get a steady momentum going.

“In the end we knew we had to keep up the defense and keep our lead,” Heidemann said.

For a young team with only four seniors, they played as if they were much more experienced.

“We did awesome today, we all wanted it and this was the best we’ve played all season,” Heidemann said.
