More than 25 private schools were on hand in large numbers for the 41st Annual St. John’s Maverick Relays at the McMurrey track Friday night and Saturday afternoon. In the end, it was the Dallas St. Mark’s (175 points) boys and Bellaire Episcopal (119) girls taking the team titles.

Dallas St. Mark's coach John Turek reflected on some of the successes of the team the past two days.

“I think it is just the overall balance of the team. We have quality kids in all of the events,” Turek said. “That proves to be our strength when we come into invitations like this. We just had good, solid performances.”

For starters, the 4-by-100 relay team with Terdema Ussery, Jacques Barjon, John Criss and Witt Shaw took first place with a time of 43.8. St. Mark's also took the gold in the 4x200-meter relay (Barjon, Stephen Langdon, Andrew Langdon, Shaw).

In the 4-by-400 and 4-by-800 relays, the Kinkaid boys took the gold with a time of 3:29.21. That team consisted of Kevin Anding, George Collins, Pierce Cohen, and Travis Gill. For the 4x800 (time: 8:27.66), Anding, Ian Herbert, Edric Martinez, and Gill were the participants.

The same scenario was in the girls division as well as the Episcopal girls took the 4-by-400 and 4-by-800. Taylor Buckner, Sarah Yeates, Candace Springer and Lauren Hollins ran a time of 3:59.44 in the mile relay. In the 4x800, Buckner, Yeates, Laura Sellingsloh and Hollins ran a 9:52.51.

For the girls’ 4-by-100, Kinkaid’s team of Lilian Nwora, Emily Burke, Lee Simon and Sloan Childress finished first with time of 51.5. Candace Bailey, Janie Wilde, Charlotte Iupe and Jessica Chen of St. Johns won the 4x200 relay with a 1:49.63.

Teammates taking first and second place in events were the trend on a few different occasions. For the Episcopal girls, Buckner (2:20.5) and Alex Perouty (2:22.3) finished one, two in the girls’ 800-meter run while Kristyn Story (16.9) and Katherine Kuntz (17.0) did the same in the 100-meter hurdles.

In the 100-meters for the boys, St. Mark's Barjon (11.3) and Criss (11.4) pulled in 18 points for their team with a first and second finish.
