Kinkaid’s boys lacrosse team returns this year as a whole new team. The 2007 district champions graduated more than 15 seniors last year and look to only three returning varsity players for guidance.
Among those three is Boone Bajgier, the Falcons goalie. Coach Jeremy Platt is looking to Bajgier to lead his team back to the postseason. And for Bajgier’s performance thus far, he is the Athlete’s Connection’s College Ball or Bust.com Athlete of the Week.
“We are a young team but we’ve got lots of potential and talent from the freshman and sophomore classes,” Bajgier said. “We can fill that void, as we’ve proved this season so far.”
The Falcons are 3-2 overall but 3-0 in Houston. Their two losses came in Dallas, where they lost to Dallas Jesuit and Plano. All three wins have happened at home against Katy Taylor, Kingwood and Lamar.
Bajgier is an all-state goalie and Kinkaid’s team captain. He is a senior who plans to attend Texas A&M in the fall to play for the Aggies’ club team and study petroleum engineering.
The captain is being recognized this week for his two “phenomenal” performances versus Kingwood and Lamar last week.
“He’s our senior captain,” Platt said. “He’s doing exactly what I need him to do. He is certainly deserving of it.”
Platt went on to say, “This week he played two phenomenal games.”
With more than 11 saves in the game versus Kingwood and a similar total versus Lamar, Bajgier is on track to repeat last year.
But it’s been a long year for Bajgier, who is happy to be back on the field. The multi-sport athlete injured himself in the first game of football season, tearing his ACL, MCL and PCL. Bajgier didn’t have surgery on his knee and was out of commission for seven months.
“I’m back,” Bajgier said. “It’s the grace of God. I’m able to cut, run, and all that.”
To stay in shape, Bajgier did lots of swimming and rehabbed with weights.
His injuries kept him from finishing the football season and participating in his soccer season. The doctors cleared him to swim for Kinkaid and just two weeks ago, at the start of the season, he was cleared for lacrosse.
“He’s playing without any knee ligaments right now,” Platt said. “It’s amazing. He got the clearance to come out here and play and he is doing a phenomenal job.”
And Bajgier is excited to play.
“Lacrosse is definitely my number one sport,” he said. “I’ve been the starting varsity goalie here for four years. I love playing goalie because I love the rush. I enjoy everything there is about the sport including the lights, the coaches, the yelling, the emotions, and the team.”
With hard work and victories, Kinkaid just might make it back to the post-season with their young team.
“We’d like to go back to state,” Bajgier said. “We’ve got to come out and beat all the Houston teams. We have our work cut out for us with Episcopal, St. John’s, and The Woodlands. But I think we can definitely do it.”
Last year the Falcons went to state and lost in the first round, but Bajgier has high hopes this year, his senior year.
“I think that this year is going to be a special year,” Bajgier said.
