The Memorial girls soccer team is one way away from a perfect district season.

And the Mustangs still don’t know whether they’ll be champions by themselves.

Memorial’s 2-0 win against Nimitz in a 19-5A game Tuesday night at Tully Stadium improved the Mustangs to 11-0-2 in the district. As of the end of the game, they remained tied with archrival Stratford for first-place. And because the two don’t play again – at least in the regular-season – they could end up tied.

Memorial (16-4-2, 11-0-2) finishes the regular-season Friday against Spring Woods.

The Mustangs looked sharp Tuesday, holding the ball nearly the entire game and never giving Nimitz any sustained scoring chances.

Junior defender Katherine Mathews and sophomore midfielder Molly Walker scored in the first half for Memorial. Mathews gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game, and Walker scored with about 4:40 left in the half.

“I have a very strong defense and a lot of depth. It doesn’t matter who I put in there,” Memorial coach Kim York said. “They know to get the job done. My keeper does a great job talking to the defense, and that helps the offense too because we had the ball probably 90 percent of the game.”

That’s not unusual.

“We’ve been fortunate the last few years to have had a lot of games like this,” York said. “We’ve had some games where we’ve had possession and couldn’t get anything to hit. But I can send any of these girls in and they’re gonna know what to do.”

In the event of a tie with Stratford, the two teams will forgo a playoff game and the coaches will decide amongst themselves which team will be seeded first or second from the district for the tournament. The teams would be listed as co-district champions.
