Competition was high this year in all events at the 57th Annual Texas Southern University Relays, especially Saturday for the final rounds of all events.
The boys high jump reached new heights this year as DeAndre Crayton of Lamar High School jumped his way to the gold medal.
The senior won the event as he was the only one of four other jumpers to clear six-feet-four-inches.
“The competition was pretty good this year,” Crayton said. “Usually when I jump, everyone falls out at six feet, but this year, everyone was still around at 6-2.”
Six-feet-4 is Crayton’s personal best, which he achieved last week at Barnett Stadium in the Dave Bethany Relays. After winning Saturday, Crayton tried to beat his own personal best by going for 6-5 but couldn’t clear the bar.
The track-and-field season is nearing its end as the athletes have only a few more track meets left.
Crayton and Lamar’s season is going well, according to Crayton. The senior, who plans on going to college and jumping, has won at least two medals in every meet this year. Crayton also competes in the triple jump.
Many Houston-area teams finished their competition Saturday morning, taking home medals. For up-to-date results, visit www.deltatiming.com.
Finals continue all day and into the evening for high school and college with events such as hurdles, pole vault, shot put, and race relays.
Opening ceremonies will be held in the late afternoon and the Athlete’s Connection will be bringing you full coverage of the remaining events.
