Decked out in black sunglasses with a palpable air of confidence about him, Travis Nollsch was in his element Saturday.
The Langham Creek senior proceeded to set one of the nation’s best times in the 400-meter dash, running 48.51 seconds and placing second at the 57th Annual Texas Southern University Relays. For his accomplishments, Nollsch is the Athlete’s Connection’s CollegeBallorBust.com Athlete of the Week.
In a meet full of top times not only in Texas but nationally, Nollsch fit right in. He finished to Willowridge’s Arte’ Collins, whose 48.01 is the second-fastest time in Texas this season. They arguably were the two standouts in the event with Hightower’s Robert Simmons – one of the nation’s top runners in the event – bypassing that race to concentrate on others.
Nollsch, who is considering running collegiately at the University of Arkansas among other schools, is devoted to track. His blog says as much – part of his profile name refers to running, as do many pictures.
Nollsch, who also has been a high jumper, ran 49.33 his sophomore year to place second at the District 17-5A championships. Among other notable performances were a fourth-place finish in the 200 (22.49) at the AAU Region 9 championships last summer in San Antonio and a 22.6 time in the AAU Junior Olympics championships last summer in Knoxville, Tenn.
