Memorial’s boys’ lacrosse team is fighting for a bye and home-field advantage in the upcoming playoffs.
On Wednesday night, the Mustangs (9-3, 9-1) moved one step closer in their fight with a 5-4 win over Cinco Ranch.
“It started off a little sloppy but the second half picked up,” Memorial coach Mike Newton said. “We picked up some momentum and found a way to win.”
Tied at 2 at the end of the third quarter, the Mustangs found a way to score three goals back-to-back-to-back in only minutes of the fourth quarter.
Midfielder Stephen Wise broke the tie then, following Harrison Walker’s insurance goal, Wise scored again for a 5-2 lead.
But Cinco Ranch, which is playing for a playoff spot, fought back and scored two goals from Will Cargo and Carson Sublett. The Cougars came close to tying Memorial in the last minute, but Mustang’s saved the goals.
In the first half, Memorial’s Robert Sauermann scored both goals. He was assisted by Junji Wiener both times.
Cinco Ranch’s Sublett and Eric Larson scored in the first half to tie it 2-2 at halftime.
The Mustangs play one more game before a meeting with rival Stratford.
“We are hoping to go into the Stratford game 10-1,” Networn said.
