Consistency is something that every coach at every level of sports wants for his team. And despite a 6-3 victory over Concordia Lutheran (2-11) Thursday night, Second Baptist baseball coach Jeff Schroeder expects much more from the Eagles.
“We’re just bad on playing consistently and that’s what happened tonight,” Schroeder said. “We did have a good start, but we did not play to our ability level. We have plenty of natural ability, but we are not getting the most out of our ability. And if we don’t do that, we are going to stay where we are. But if we start improving mentally, we will be a dangerous team.”
But Second Baptist (15-4) started hot. In the first inning, both Cooper Smith and Caleb Hartwell each had RBI singles to get the first points on the board and Jacob Plagens followed up in the second with an RBI single as well.
The only home run of the night was by the Eagles’ Chris Duncan who made the rounds for an in-the-park homer. And according to Schroeder, Duncan and many of the other Eagle players are holding it down at the plate.
“The top of our order is really hitting well,” Schroeder said. “Our lead-off batter Jacob Plagens is hitting well and Cooper Smith in the outfield is hitting .400 plus and getting on base a lot. Our catcher (Duncan) is swinging a hot bat. Up and down our line up, we are hitting well.”
With a steady 4-0 lead, the Eagles were not finished until the fourth inning when Ross Seaton reached base on an error and chalked up two RBIs. Then, the Crusaders started their run.
In the fifth inning, David Farrell and Tyler Richardson both singled. Dayton Parker earned the RBI when he reached base on an error and Richardson scored on a wild pitch. Brent Schaekel brought in the final score with a fielder’s choice RBI.
On the mound for the Eagles was Andrew Jones who earned the win. Plagens got the save.
Dane Molskness was the losing pitcher.
Second Baptist will take on Westbury Christian Friday night.
