Teams ready for shots at district championships
Monday March 31, 2008

Tuesday marked the beginning of track and field’s second season – the postseason. Many area teams are sending representatives to the Texas Relays this week, but because that and many district meets collide most teams used the Texas Southern University Relays two weeks ago as their district primer.

The following is a glance at the area’s district meets and possible championship contenders.

The 5A regional meet is scheduled for April 25 and 26 in Humble.

DISTRICT MEETS AT A GLANCE

17-5A

WHEN: Next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
WHERE: Cypress Falls.
WHO TO LOOK FOR: Among the championship favorites on the boys side will be Cypress Falls’ Blake Shaw, a USC commit who placed second in the University 800 at the recent TSU Relays and is running about 4:10 in the 1,600. Cypress Ridge’s 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relay teams, featuring Russell Shepard and Hasan Lipscomb among others, also should be favored.
Cypress Springs has a chance to dominate the girls competition. Grecia Bolton (100), Kimberlyn Duncan (200) and the 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relays hold the best times in those races.

19-5A
WHEN: Events begin at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and 5:30 p.m. Friday.
WHERE: Smith Stadium at Aldine High School.
SCHEDULE: Preliminaries and field finals will be Tuesday and Wednesday. Running finals will be Friday.
WHO TO LOOK FOR: On the boys side, Eisenhower seems the prohibitive favorite. David Smith has been impressive in the 1,600 and 3,200. The Eagles may make noise on the girls side, too, but Memorial’s Helene DeLone among others should have a say in the distance races.

Houston ISD meet
WHEN: Events begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and 5 p.m. Friday.
WHERE: Barnett Stadium.
WHO: All districts (nine schools in 20-5A, including Lamar, Bellaire and Westside; and seven each in 19-4A and 20-4A).
SCHEDULE: Tuesday is the boys field events prelims and finals, and girls’ running prelims and 4-by-800 relay finals. Wednesday is the girls field events prelims and finals, and boys’ running prelims and 4-by-800 relay finals. All running finals are Friday.
WHO TO LOOK FOR: This should be an excellent meet on most imaginable fronts. Fans got a preview at the TSU Relays two weeks ago, when Wheatley’s Dominique Duncan won the 100 (11.74) and 200 (23.68, a PR). On the whole, Lamar and Westbury should compete for titles on both sides with the Redskins’ Blessing Mayungbe leading the way in the sprints and Westbury being dominant in the relays and field events.

18-5A
WHEN: April 14 and 15. Originally scheduled for this week, district coaches opted to move the meet so athletes could compete in the Texas Relays in Austin. The Athlete's Connection will further preview this meet coming soon.
WHERE: Cinco Ranch.
