The Cypress Springs softball team has four games left in the regular season and they are fighting for a playoff spot. On Wednesday, the Panthers evened their District 17-5A record at 5-5 win a 6-0 win over Cypress Ridge.

The Panthers gave up only two hits in the later innings. Taylor Brown, Springs’ starting pitcher, hurled the shutout and allowed only two hits.

“Taylor Brown is only a sophomore,” Springs coach Michele Herman said. “She does a great job for us. She works hard and she’s great in the box too.”

Springs is fighting with Jersey Village and Cy Falls for the fourth playoff spot. Cypress Woods, which Springs plays Friday, entered Wednesday in second place.

Brown, Springs’ leadoff hitter, started the game with a hit. She stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. The Panthers couldn’t bring Brown home in the first inning, but she did score in the third.

With one out, Brown was hit by a pitch. She then stole second and then third to put herself in scoring position. Amanda Turpin came to the plate and got an RBI, bringing home Brown. Following Turpin was Kayla Holland who hit her first triple of two triples, scoring Turpin for a 2-0 lead.

Cy Springs’ next big inning was the fifth. A lead off walk from Abbey Wilkowski started it. Then with two outs, Brittany Upton doubled and Holland hit her second triple to score two runs. Lindsay Carroll came to the plate and ripped a long ball, taking her to third and scoring another run. The Panthers’ last run came off of a hit from Megan Sofka which scored Carroll.

Herman emphasized that the team knew what they wanted to achieve and how they were going to achieve it.

“We set some goals that we wanted to achieve in specific innings,” Herman said. “Out of the eight goals that we set, we achieved six. We are really focused on getting something done every inning, whether it is defensively or offensively.”

The Rams' first hit came in the fifth from catcher Gwen Haley who hit a triple but was unable to score. The second came in the seventh. The Rams had an opportunity to score in the sixth with bases loaded and two outs but didn't capitalize.
