Even with a surprise turn of weather, the boys and girls of District 19-5A raced on as the district finals never ceased Friday night at Aldine High School's Smith Stadium.

The unexpected wind and rain Friday night didn’t slow the runners as their hopes of making the top three in their respected event was too high, hoping to move on to Regionals.

As The Athlete’s Connection reported earlier this week, teams to be on the lookout for were Eisenhower and Memorial.

Both schools had athletes placing in the top three spots in each event, sending them further into the postseason.

Nimitz's boys scored 165 points to win the meet, 63 more than runner-up Memorial, which was a point ahead of third-place Eisenhower. But the Mustangs' girls ran away with the title, scoring 191 points.

Eisenhower was third was 134, followed by Nimitz (118) and Stratford (82).

Complete team results and event winners are listed below.

Harrison Clinch of Memorial’s varsity ran a 50.77 in the 400-meter dash. The senior, who also competed in the 4-by-400 relay, almost matched his personal best at 49.8.

“The team is doing better than I thought,” Clinch said. “We have a few key teammates injured, but we are doing well.”

Memorial coach Richard Ruez added, “They are running better than I thought on all levels.”

The athletes didn’t seem fazed by the weather. They stayed warm in sweats and by doing warm-up drills in the infield.

“The weather was so unexpected,” Clinch said. “None of us were really prepared for it.”

Other top performers included the Mustangs' Helene DeLone, who won the mile (5:27.34) and two-mile (12:04.2); and Eisenhower, which won all four girls relays.
