District 17-5A's track and field teams didn’t let a little wind slow them down Wednesday night at Cypress Falls. With the wind blowing in their faces at times, the runners pushed themselves and excelled.

The boys of Cypress Ridge and the girls of Cy-Fair placed first with overwhelming leads. The Rams scored 127 points, 43 ahead of runner-up Strake Jesuit, to win their first district championship.

The Bobcats girls racked up 134 points, 38 ahead of second-place Cypress Springs, to win their fourth district championship.

Contributing to Cy-Fair’s win was Kandace Malone in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and the 4-by-400 relay. Malone placed first in both hurdle events and the lady Bobcats placed first in the relay with a time of 4:01.18.

“I went to regionals last year and made it to the second day, where I placed fifth (hurdles),” Malone said. “But right now I’m really tired. I’ve been training hard and I just hope at regionals to PR my time.”

Possibly a surprise this year, the Cy-Fair boys’ team placed third and missed their fifth consecutive title.

Top o' the heap

The Cypress Falls sprint medley relay team registered the fastest time in the nation for 2008 last weekend at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.

The relay team of Blake Shaw, Tim Davis, Dedrick Johnson and Rickardo Chambers recorded a time of 3:27.23, propelling them to the top of the list kept by DyeStat.

Shaw, a senior who will run for USC next year, also holds the nation’s top time of 1:49.41 in the 800-meter run.
