Cinco Ranch’s historic season is over.
The Cougars took the lead just two minutes into their 5A boys soccer state semifinal Thursday, but defending champion Lewisville Flower Mound Marcus tied it shortly thereafter and took the lead with 20 minutes left to defeat Cinco Ranch 2-1 at Round Rock ISD Stadium.
It was the first loss of the season for the Cougars (22-1-6), who were playing in their first state tournament.
Cougars forward Ryan Silveira scored in the second minute off a Josh Reicks header, but about three minutes later Marcus’ Randy Wright tied it off a crossing pass from Sam Garza. Wright then received a yellow card for excessive celebration.
Marcus (25-3-3) went ahead with 20:15 to play, when Chad Caldwell headed in a goal off a corner kick from Eric Frazier.
Marcus goalie Jared Jacobs saved nine of 10 shots.
Marcus will play Klein in the state championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday. Klein (20-2-2), seeking its fourth state title, defeated San Antonio Churchill in a shootout in the later semifinal. Klein won the shootout 4-3 after regulation ended in a 1-all tie.
5A GIRLS: Plano East 2, Clear Lake 0
Serena Hines and Courtney Garner scored to power Plano East (24-3-3) past Clear Lake (21-4-4) in the second of two girls semifinals.
Plano East, like Clear Lake a first-time state qualifier, will play Southlake Carroll (23-4-4) in the state final at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Dragons defeated San Antonio MacArthur 3-0 in Thursday’s other semifinal.
Hines scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway 9 minutes, 43 seconds in.
Clear Lake kept it a 1-0 game midway through the first half when goalie Christa Rostohar made a save of Carolyn Polcari’s penalty kick. The Falcons got several quality scoring opportunities the rest of the first half and into the second before Garner’s insurance goal with 3:17 to play.
