Cypress Woods traveled to Cypress Ridge Friday night for their final road game of the district season. The Wildcats ended up topping Cy Ridge 12-1 in six innings, hanging on to first place in District 17-5A.
In only their first varsity season, the Wildcats (17-5, 12-1) have taken the district lead on determination, according to coach Cliff Bond.
“They are the most determined girls I’ve ever seen,” Bond said. “They show a lot of heart.”
Five juniors lead the young team of eight sophomores and one freshman. With a young group of girls, Bond feels it works toward their advantage.
“I feel like we’ve got a real good chance because they are not scared of anybody,” Bond said.
In Friday’s game, the Wildcats scored 12 runs to Cy Ridge’s one in six innings. The visitors came in and scored three runs right off the bat. Although reaching base in the following two innings, Cy Woods produced no runs.
The top of the fourth was a big inning for the Cats as they scored five runs on four hits. With two runners on base, Kaitlyn Friedel knocked them in and advanced to third. Christina Cordova then knocked in Friedel with a hit. Kat Moreno reached base and Rachel Stanford doubled in the last two runs of the inning for an 8-0 lead.
“My girls off the bench have done a great job for me,” Bond said. “I brought in Rachel Stanford tonight and she had a single, double, and triple.”
Cy Woods kept the ball alive in the top of six, scoring four more runs on four more hits, for the run-rule win.
“We have not really blown anybody out this season,” Bond said. “This is only the second time we’ve run-ruled a team. But we have always found a way to win a game. They’ve never given up on anything.”
Katie Franks was the winning pitcher.
“Katy is extremely good,” Bond said. “She has come on real strong here at the end of the season. She does a phenomenal job of keeping the ball down low and causing groundballs.”
Cy Woods will play its final district game Monday at home against Jersey Village. When the bi-district round of playoffs begin, the Wildcats will face a Katy ISD team, possibly Katy Taylor or Mayde Creek, Bond said.
