Mary Beth Allcorn gave one last hurrah in her last home game as a Cinco Ranch Cougar.

The senior first baseman went 3-for-3 and hit two home runs to lead Cinco's softball team to a 5-2 win against Mayde Creek Tuesday night as Cougars try to end the regular season on a strong note.

“That was my third home run of the season, and I had a few hit off of the top of the fence,” she said.

Allcorn, who got three RBIs while hitting sixth in the lineup, hit a solo homer in the second inning off of Ram pitcher Callie Darlin to tie the game at one. Then in the sixth inning with a runner on second, Allcorn got a hold of a Darlin pitch and hit it straight to center field to put Cinco in control of the game.

“She’s been doing awesome,” Cinco Ranch coach Kerry Simpson said. “She’s fitting well in that part of the lineup and doing what it takes to score runs.”

Meanwhile, pitcher Kristen Rumley came in relief of starter Kelly Tepper in the third and held Mayde Creek to only two hits and had eight strikeouts.

“I pulled Kelly because they were hitting off of her a little bit,” Simpson said. “Kristin has been working on some pitches and has been looking really good. I have a lot of confidence in her even though she’s a freshman. She’s really doing a great job.”

Tepper struggled with her control in the first, as the Rams got a run when Abby Ayers scored on a throwing error by shortstop Alex Reynolds. Mayde Creek would then load the bases, but Tepper got out of the inning by forcing second baseman Leslie Sheffy to ground out to second.

After Allcorn’s first homer in the second, the Cougars took the lead for good in the third inning when centerfielder Jessica Stoelke hit a triple into the right-center field gap and scored two batters later on a bunt by outfielder Emily Meurer. Cinco Ranch (22-4, 11-2) went up 3-1 in the fifth as first baseman Courtney Buchman doubled home Reynolds.

Mayde Creek (16-8, 8-5) pulled within a run in the top of the sixth when infielder Jessi Ortiz – who doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt – scored on a grounder to first by shortstop Miranda Yeager. But the Cougars countered in the bottom of the inning when catcher Meghan Brown walked and third baseman Brittany Svab grounded back to the mound, in which Darlin went to second to force out Brown. Then Allcorn’s second blast to center clinched the win for Cinco.

“We’re just cruising right now. Everyone is doing their job,” Simpson said. “We have a couple of players that are not hitting well, but are playing good defense. Everybody is working together to get things done and are so positive with each other.”

The Cougars now prepare to face Katy with the District 18-5A championship on the line Friday night.

Cinco beat the Tigers 3-2 on March 25 and is a game behind Katy in the standings, meaning a win would force a tie and give the Lady Cougs the tiebreaker. Meanwhile, Mayde Creek will face Elsik on Friday to end the regular season.
