The Second Baptist softball team’s bats and pitching sealed a 7-0 victory over Houston Christian Tuesday night. The Eagles had 10 hits and 17 strikeouts.
Sophomore pitcher Kendall Stiefel sat her opponents down early as she racked up nine strikeouts in the first four innings. Working on a no hitter, Stiefel gave up her first-of-three hits in the fourth.
“Kendall did fantastic out there,” Eagles coach Jay Klingenberg said. “She had 17 strikeouts tonight. This makes the third game in a row she’s had 16 plus strikeouts. So she’s been pitching real well for us.”
The Eagles have secured second place in their district, just behind Fort Bend Baptist (26-2). Helping the Eagles’ 28-5 season record has been their bats.
Virginia Keel led with a double and quickly scored on a double. Lauren Rogers continued the hitting and eventually scored on an RBI from Betsy Williams to lead 2-0 at the end of the first.
The Eagles went down in order in the second but turned that around in the third as Keel led off with another double. She then scored their third run on a double from Carly Calhoun. Second Baptist scored two more runs at the end of the inning.
Second Baptist scored their last two runs in the bottom of the sixth on three hits.
“The season is going really well,” Klingenberg said. “We’ve gotten some good performances out of some people.”
Playoffs will begin next week for the Eagles and Klingenberg predicts they’ll either play Dallas Lutheran or Tyler Grace Community in round one and then face last year’s rival if they win.
“We’ll probably be playing Midland Christian in the second round of playoffs,” Klingenberg said. “They knocked us out last year in the regional final. So that’s going to be a tough, tough game.”
