There was plenty of scoring and excitement at Kingwood Park High School on Thursday night, when the Houston Area Basketball Coaches Association held its 2008 All-Star Game and festivities.

Two games featured some of the top Houston-area seniors playing in their final high school game.

In the first game, the Sandy Schwartz All-Stars beat the John Lee Alexander Hart All-Stars 124-108. The Schwartz All-Stars were led by Barbers Hill guard Brooks Ybarra, who scored a game-high 20 points. Jared Maree of Chavez added 19 points.

Hastings forward De’Everett Williams led the Hart All-Stars with 17 points, while Kingwood forward Jordan McGowen had 15.

The second game was a nail biter, as the Harold Wilder All-Stars held on to beat the Virel Kalinowski All-Stars 99-96. Wheatley guard Deshun Garrett hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute left that ended up being the game-winner.

Elkins guard and University of Washington recruit Elston Turner had 21 points, while Branden Harrison of Milby had 19 points.

Cypress Springs guard Phillip McDonald – who is going to play at New Mexico next season – led the Kalinowski All-Stars with 16 points, with College Park forward Kirk Van Slyke scoring 15 points. Van Slyke is committed to West Point.

Klein Collins guard Bassel Bawji and Klein Forest guard Toure Murray each had 14 points for the Kalinowski All-Stars.

During the games, there was a 3-point shooting contest and a slam-dunk contest. Murray hit 14-of-25 from the arc to win the shooting contest, while Jerrick Hoskins of Smiley won the slam-dunk competition with a Michael Jordan-esque slam over the head of a little girl.
