Katy Taylor softball coach Billie Powell didn't mince words when asked about his team's advantage in a bi-district playoff series against Cypress Creek.

“We just had an ace in the hole named Sarah Blair,” Powell said.

Blair led the Mustangs to a 3-0 win over Cypress Creek in Game 2 of the bi-district playoff series Friday night at Cypress Falls.

“She just does her thing out there and anytime she’s out on the mound, she gives us a chance to win,” Powell said.

The senior pitcher not only gave the Mustangs a chance to win on the mound, she also came through at the plate.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Blair led off with a hit up the middle. With a failed sacrifice bunt and one out, Alyssa Williams caused an error which advanced Blair to third base and Williams took second.

Jennifer Hooker drag bunted and reached on a fielder’s choice, after scoring Blair. Callie Lazarine followed with a hard hit down the third base line to score Hooker and Williams.

“We had some girls come through at the plate at the right time,” Powell said. “That part of the line up, the No. 5, 6, 7, and 8 hitters, did a good job for us, both tonight and (Thursday) night. By them coming through with the hits that they did, we were able to move on.”

Blair allowed one hit and struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.

“We lean on her a little bit but that’s ok,” Powell said. “She’s the kind of player that likes us doing that from time to time.”

Katy Taylor will face Lamar next week in a best-of-three-game series in the area round.

“We don’t know too much about them but we know they are going to be a good team to beat,” Powell said.
