The first day of the Region III-5A track and field meet saw a good start for the Hightower relay teams and strong performances in the field events.
Held at Turner Stadium in Humble, the Hightower 400-meter relay team put up a strong time of 41.12 seconds in their preliminary heat to qualify for Saturday afternoon’s final. The Eisenhower relay team also did well, putting up a 41.19 and Lamar had a 41.47.
In the field events, senior DeAndre Thompson of Alief Taylor won the triple jump with a distance of 47 feet and 9.5 inches. Second was Channelview’s Ricky Bridgewater with a distance of 45-11 and Deandrew White of North Shore was third with 45-11.
The shot put was won by senior Michael Barbas of Jersey Village with a distance of 60-11.5. Second was South Houston senior Weekendfer Saurit (59-7.25) and Baytown Lee junior Zac Zellers was third (56-9).
In the high jump, Jeff Herron of Fort Bend Austin beat out Travis sophomore Jerron Robinson by an inch. Herron leaped for a distance of 6 feet, 8 inches, while Robinson jumped for 6-7. Cypress Creek junior Cameron Howard was third with 6-4.
The action resumes Saturday with finals in the discus and long jump at 9 a.m., then the running finals will get underway at 2 p.m. with the 400-meter relay.
