Alief Taylor, Fort Bend Austin off to good start at regionals

The Alief Taylor girls got off to a good start in the field events at the Region III-5A track and field meet Friday night at Turner Stadium in Humble.

 

A couple of second-place finishes have the Lions atop of the team standings after the first day of competition.

 

Senior Jennifer Newke was second in the girls high jump behind Tanika Birch of Mayde Creek, who jumped a distance of 5 feet and 4 inches. Channelview’s My’unikuo McNorton leaped for a distance of 5-6.

 

Taylor’s Emily Nnokwan was second in the discus throw, throwing for 127 feet and 3 inches. Senior Akua Senchery of Brazoswood won the event by throwing for 130-6. Morton Ranch senior Caroline Kellen was third with 124-4.

 

The pole vault was won by Deer Park junior Kalli Sutton (10-6), with Fort Bend Austin’s Casie Wilson second (10-6) and Brooke Meyer of Katy Taylor third (10-0).

 

The shot put was won by Westbury’s Okafor Ikeatu (46-4.25), with Austin junior Jennifer Edwards finishing second (43-7.50) and Clear Creek’s Taylor Smith was third (43-7.5).

 

The Westbury 400-meter relay team turned in the best time in preliminary heats, running for a time of 46.32 seconds. Cypress Springs was second with 46.82 and Elsik with 46.93.

 

The running finals will start at 2 p.m. Saturday with the 400 relay. The long jump will be at 9 a.m.
