St. John’s and Memorial duked it out for the city championship Saturday afternoon at Grob Stadium.
The Mavericks used team work to pull out a 13-8 victory against the Mustangs.
“When our offense needed a big play, defense came up with it and when defense needed a big play, offense was there to get it,” St. John coach Angie Kensinger said. “There was a lot of good team work and I was very happy to see that.”
The first half was close. Memorial got a lead on the Mavericks in the first half but St. John’s came back to tie and then take the lead after the half.
With 20 minutes left in the game, St. John’s led 8-5. Scoring went back and forth until the Mavericks broke out and shot four consecutive balls in the net, all from different players.
St. John’s and Memorial will likely see each other for the state championship May 10-11 and look forward to a rematch.
“We have a great rivalry,” Kensinger said. “It’s an old rivalry. It’s always a great game. Both teams really look forward to it.
“Today we expected them to give us a great game and they lived up to that bill.”
St. John’s will travel to Forth Worth next Thursday for a Southwest Preparatory Conference game.
