All Pearland's girls track and field team had to do was believe.
Thanks to strong performances in the hurdles, the Oilers pulled away from the pack to win the team title at the Region III-5A track meet Saturday at Turner Stadium in Humble. The Oilers got strong performances from seniors Jessica Flax and Amber Rozier, who finished 1-2 in the 300-meter hurdles.
Pearland finished with 56 points, four ahead of second-place Westbury and five ahead of third-place Elsik.
“They believed all year that they can do something great,” Pearland coach Brandi Woods said. “I told them from the beginning that this is a year for great things, and they believed that. They believed in me and trust in me.”
Flax also won in the 100-meter hurdles with at time of 14.5 seconds. The 1,600 relay team of Flax, senior Alexia Frank and juniors Rubenisha Cooper and Denisha Hardeman, got a third-place finish, behind second-place Lamar and winner Westside, which won with a time of 3:45.02.
Clear Brook senior Erica Alexander also had a strong day at the track, winning the 100- and 200-meter dash and the high jump. Alexander, who won gold last year in the 200 and 400, hopes to get another championship in the high jump in Austin on May 6.
Westside won three events, as Tiffany Singleton won the 800 and Diamond Dixon won the 400. Dixon joined teammates Kayla Love, Chelsea Jackson and Lauren Reese to win the 800 relay with a time of 3:45.02.
