Lexy Bennett, Virginia Keel and Lauren Rogers showed they are the leaders on Second Baptist’s softball team. The three seniors led the host Eagles to a 4-0 victory against St. John’s Monday night.

“It was a big night for our seniors,” Second Baptist coach Jay Klingenberg said. “All three seniors came through tonight.”

With only two total hits on the books through the top of the fourth, Second Baptist’s senior shortstop, Bennett ripped one up the middle. An error on St. John’s allowed Bennett to advance to third and give the Eagles a chance to score.

Rogers, the catcher, followed with a long sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Bennett to tag up and score.

“Lauren Rogers got a single in the second inning and then got the sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to get the first run,” Klingenberg said about his three seniors.

Another full inning passed before the next hit of the game was recorded. Again it came from one of Klingenberg’s seniors. Keel led off the inning with a hit. A bunt moved Keel to second and a big double by Bennett scored Keel and Regan Fuerst, who was safe at first on an error.

“Virginia Keel got us started in the sixth and then Lexy followed that up with a double,” Klingenberg said, still gloating about his seniors.

A double later in the sixth scored Bennett, giving Second Baptist a four-run lead.

The Eagles are in their postseason and played St. John’s Monday night as a makeup game.

“This is a makeup game but we’re also using it as a tune up for our next playoff game,” said Klingenberg. “On Friday we won our first round game against Tyler Grace Community, 15-0.”

“Our next round game, with all probability, will be against Midland Christian in Kerrville,” Klingenberg continued. “That will be a big game. That’s the game we lost last year in regionals. We had to go all the way to Midland then so we’re hoping this year will be on a more neutral site and a little more to our advantage.”
