Down two runs after the first inning Tuesday night, St. Agnes fought hard to tie St. John’s in the fourth and eventually earn a 3-2 win.

“We came out and played like a team does in the first half of the season and this is the wrong time for that,” St. Agnes coach Lynn Kercheval said.

St. John’s jumped out of the gates early by racking up two runs. The Mavericks kept St. Agnes off the bases in the bottom of one, but allowed the Tigers to score one run in the second.

Sandi Moynihan led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to left-center field to tie the game. It wasn’t until the bottom of six that the game saw another base runner.

“Sandi has done a great job hitting and also commanding the pitching staff,” Kercheval said. “She’s a very upbeat player. She knows the game and demonstrates that quite regularly.”

Denise Campos forced an error after hitting the ball hard on the ground to lead off the inning. Lindsay Price and Moynihan both sacrificed themselves to advance Campos to third.

Marian Chen hit a shot through third and shortstop to score Campos and take the lead. Lauren Kattchee followed with a hit but the Tigers couldn’t get an insurance run.

Then from the mound, Kattchee shut down the side for the victory.

TAPPS 6-A district winner, St. Agnes, will play its first playoff game at 4 p.m. Friday, hosting Holy Cross San Antonio.

“Our district was very competitive and we easily could have come in third without a catch here or a hit there,” Kercheval said. “We have seen our opponent one time in a tournament earlier in the season. We feel both teams were struggling at that point but that we have improved quite a bit and assume that they have done the same.”
