Lamar scored eight runs in the fourth inning to get a 11-0 win over MacArthur in five innings Friday night at Jersey Village to take the first game of the best-two-of-three Region III-5A bi-district series.
“I thought we kind of struggled early a little bit,” Lamar coach Mike McGilvray said. “I think after the Bellaire game, we came out a little flat. That’s my opinion.
“It’s hard to say that after 11-0, but once we got into a groove, we hit the ball well tonight.”
The Redskins will try to close out the series at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jersey Village, while the Generals (16-9) will try to extend it to a third game, which will be played 30 minutes after the second game, if necessary.
Lamar (25-5) got a three-run triple from senior infielder Anthony Rendon and a three-RBI double by sophomore catcher Cody Horr in the fourth to ice the win.
Rendon was 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored and three RBIs, while sophomore first baseman Matt Killary walked three times and scored three runs.
Meanwhile, senior pitcher Scott Erzinger held MacArthur in check, giving up only two hits and three walks while striking out six Generals. Junior reliever Tyler Duffie came on in the fifth and retired all three batters, striking out two of them.
“Scotty hadn’t been on the mound for a couple of weeks, so this was his first time in two weeks,” McGilvray said. “You take the walks away and he did real well. Then Tyler came in and threw really well at the end.”
The Redskins got going in the first inning, as senior shortstop Peter Goudeau singled home Rendon after he singled, stole second and reached third on an throwing error. In the second inning, leadoff hitter Marquis Kindle doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a wild pitch by MacArthur starter Jose Morales. Killary, who walked and moved to third on the wild pitch, scored on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Chacon to give Lamar a 3-0 lead.
The winner of this series would face either Langham Creek or Cinco Ranch in the area round.
“We got some guys that can pitch, and if we keep hitting the baseball, we could keep playing for a while,” McGilvray said.
