The University Interscholastic League on Friday released the results of a study of a split conference alignment for football.

The proposal would divide each conference into two divisions for football only, theoretically creating a level playing field among schools of like size. The large-school division and smaller halves of each conference each would consist of 16 districts, with approximately six to eight schools per district.

The same number of schools from each district would advance to the playoffs.

Another possible advantages of the UIL plan, according to the organization's press release, include more clarity as to which schools enter the playoffs in Division I and Division II.

Possible disadvantages include additional travel, some level of administrative inconvenience and scheduling issues at stadiums shared by several schools within one ISD.

The UIL staff presented the concept to the Legislative Council in June and October.

The Council authorized the study to provide information regarding the actual placement of schools into districts.
