“It’s contagious,” Memorial baseball coach Jeremy York said. “When one goes, they all go.”

York was referring to the way his team hit the ball Friday and Saturday against Milby in their bi-district series. The Mustangs crushed Milby 20-9 in the first game of the three game series on Friday and swept the series with a 13-3 victory Saturday at Stratford.

“They’ve been swinging the bats well all year long and we want to continue swinging the bats well,” York said.

The Mustangs scored 13 runs off 12 hits. Winning pitcher Nelson Laswell held the Buffaloes to two runs on four hits. Steven Murray got the save giving up one run on four hits.

Senior Ben Sample brought the first run across the plate for the Mustangs with a bases-loaded hit in the second. Two more runs crossed the plate in the third when De’Mario Thibodeaux and Michael Paul Cokinos touched the base.

Milby closed the three-run gap in the top of four when Jorge Castillo led off with a double and eventually scored. John Rodriguez reached on an error and scored on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.

“We want to improve on our defense and if we do that we’ll have a shot,” York said about his team's chances of going all the way.

If the Mustangs have one inning every game like their fourth inning, they’ll definitely have a shot.

On seven hits, Memorial scored nine runs. The Mustangs batted around the order and saw two homeruns hit by Sample and Daniel Nuemann. There were three doubles, two singles, and one walk. With a 12-2 lead, the Mustangs just need to hold Milby.

But Milby pushed on and forced another run across the plate. Richard Bautista had an RBI hit to score Edward Pallares.

Memorial’s Noel Adams ended the game when he and Kyle Guest crossed the plate in the top of seven for a ten run advantage over Milby.

With the sweep, the Mustangs will face Cypress Creek next week in the area round.

“We’ve seen them play a couple of times,” York said. “They are a very well coached ball club. They never give in and they play extremely hard. They’ve been behind in most games but they’ve done a great job at coming from behind. It’s going to be a tough test for us.”

York continued, “But we’re going to take it game by game and go from there. We’ll see what happens. We just need to pitch and play defense and hit the ball like we’ve been hitting it.”
