A one-game playoff between neighbors and rivals Katy Taylor and Cinco Ranch highlights the weekend schedule of softball regional quarterfinals and baseball area-round playoff games.

The Mustangs and Cougars softball teams will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Morton Ranch. Taylor advanced with a two-game sweep of Lamar last Friday; Cinco Ranch outlasted MacArthur in three games, losing the first but convincingly winning the next two games.

The Mustangs swept their two regular-season meetings with Cinco Ranch, which shared the 18-5A championship with Katy.

The other regional quarterfinal involving area teams will be a three-game series between Cy-Fair and Bellaire. All games will be at Stratford, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday if necessary.

The area's baseball slate arguably is highlighted by a three-game area series between defending 5A champion Cy-Fair and Westside. The pitching should be outstanding; the Bobcats are paced by 11-0 Tommy Collier, and Westside's rotation is anchored by Taylor Wall and Mike Goodnight.

The other matchups, all of which will be three-game series, are Lamar-Langham Creek, Bellaire-Katy and Cypress Creek-Memorial.
