AUSTIN - The Seven Lakes boys golf team improved its state placement by three from 2007 to 2008, but the Spartans drove home Tuesday believing they'd let a better finish get away.

Monday's best scorers faded for Tuesday's final round and vice-versa, and Seven Lakes finished fifth in the 4A state tournament at Jimmy Clay Golf Course.

Albert Miner shot a 79 on the heels of Monday's 73 and Ryan Hadash went from 75 to 83 for the Spartans, who shot 619.

Trey Sullivan shot 83 Tuesday, four shots worse than Monday.

Juan Espiga had a tremendous turnaround, improving from 83 to an even-par 72. Brian Swanson also improved by 11 shots, from 86 to 75.

Seven Lakes girls qualifier Janell Lysack shot 77 Tuesday after a 73 Monday. She tied for third-place and lost on the first playoff hole to Mei Liu of Austin Lake Travis.

"It was basically the opposite of (Monday)," Spartans coach Sean Ewing said. "The kids who shot well yesterday didn't today, and those who didn't play well Monday did today."

Dallas Highland Park swept the boys and girls championships. The boys, paced by medalist Cody Gribble, won by 19 shots. Lake Travis edged McKinney Boyd in a playoff for second place.

Gribble shot 2-under 140.

The girls shocked seven-time defending champion Montgomery by nine shots, 641-650.

Though crestfallen, Ewing passed on one final message on the team's drive home. 

"You'll look for us next year at the 5A state championship," he said.

Seven Lakes score: Janell Lysack, 150 (tied for third).
