The Westside baseball team sent defending 5A state champion Cy-Fair home Saturday afternoon after taking Game 3, 3-1, in the best-of-three game series at Jersey Village.

The Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead early Saturday, a big difference from games 1 and 2.

“I knew that Taylor (Wall) was going to give us some good innings,” Westside coach Emrick Jagneaux said. “He’s been a four year starter for us. He’s won 37 games in four years and I knew if we had him on the mound in the first game and they didn’t have (Tommy) Collier, that we had a chance to win.”

Westside answered Cy-Fair’s 8-0 beating last night with great pitching and early hits.

“We knew we weren’t going to match up with their big boy Collier who pitched last night,” Jagneaux said. “We were fortunate enough that Cory Maltz came out and did an outstanding job for us today. We were able to hold them down and get a few keys hits here and there and that’s the ball game.”

The bottom of the order got it started for the Wolves in the top of the third. Michael Falcone led off with a hit and then stole second. Garrett Shaw reached on a fielder’s choice which advanced Falcone to third, who eventually took home on a wild pitch. Shaw crossed the plate when Matt Clayton knocked him in with a hit up the middle.

After taking the lead, Maltz came through on the mound giving up just one hit, his second of the day, to shut down the Bobcats.

“The third game was just going to be a pick-and-peg,” Jagneaux said. “Fortunately we’ve got some guys that can pitch.”

Westside got an insurance run the next inning with two walks and an error to bring in Daniel Mengden.

“They’ve got a great ball club,” Jagneaux said. “They hung in there and you’ve really got to play it inning by inning with them because they’ve got a chance to explode at anytime.”

The Bobcats did manage to get one run across the plate in the sixth as a leadoff walk eventually scored.
