“We’re going into uncharted waters and that’s the fun part,” Westside baseball coach Emrick Jagneaux said Friday night.

The Wolves swept Memorial with a 6-0 win in game 2 at Langham Creek to advance to the regional semifinal round for the first time.

“It’s the furthest we’ve ever been in the history of the school and it’s only eight years old,” Jagneaux said. “It’s a tremendous accomplishment for them and a lifetime experience.”

After rallying back in the last two innings last night to win game 1, the Wolves went a different route in game 2, scoring at least one run every other inning.

“The win last night was big for us,” Jagneaux said. “We went into extra innings to win the ball game and tonight, Michael (Goodnight) just pitched outstanding. Michael went out there and controlled the game.”

Goodnight held the Mustangs to three hits, 12 strikeouts, and only three men touched third base.

The Wolves went on top 1-0 after in the first inning with two hits.

“We hit the ball when we had to,” Jagneaux said. “We put the ball on the ground.”

Matt Clayton and Taylor Wall touched home plate in the third for a three-run lead. Goodnight helped himself out in the fifth with a leadoff hit and eventually touched home when Daniel Mengden doubled. Mengden stole home on a pass ball to take a huge 5-0 lead.

Brett Zieren doubled in the Wolves’ last at-bat and added another run when Hunter Lane flew out to right field and allowed Zieren to tag up and score.

“These groups of kids are young,” Jagneaux said. “These kids right here have done a tremendous job and I love everyone one of them.”

Westside will play either Fort Bend Elkins or Baytown Sterling in the semifinals next weekend. The winning coaches will meet Monday to discuss details of next weekend’s matchup.

“Hopefully we’ll play a two-out-of-three because I think the best team is going to win a two-out-of-three,” Jagneaux said. “We’re just going to keep trudging through this thing and see where it takes us.”
