Memorial volleyball player Sidney Stewart, who led the Mustangs to the state semifinals in 2007, will have her jersey retired.

Stewart, a two-time all-state selection who was named the Houston-area player of the year last season, will have no other Memorial player wear her No. 3, according to head coach Beth Gammill.

“Sidney is considered the greatest volleyball player ever to play volleyball at Memorial and in her honor, the coaching staff, administration and athletic director has decided to retire Sidney’s No. 3 jerseys, never to be worn by a Memorial High School volleyball player again,” Gammill said.

In her high school career, Stewart had 1,058 kills and 1,057 digs, with more than 500 kills her senior year.

Stewart signed a scholarship to play volleyball at SMU in the fall.

Elsik sprinter named to all-state team

The Texas Girls Coaches Association named Elsik freshman sprinter Alicia Perkins to its 5A All-State team.

At the state track meet, Perkins finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and was on the Lady Ram relay team that won gold in the 800 relay and silver in the 400 relay.
