(Game 2)
(Game 3)
The comeback story of the Bellaire baseball team continued Saturday.
Trailing its regional final series against Westside one game to none, the Cardinals scratched out a 2-0 win in Game 2 at Ray Knoblauch Field, then scored four runs in the fifth inning of Game 3 to cruise to a 6-0 victory and their first regional championship since 1999.
In Game 2, Bellaire (39-8) pitcher Kyle Chaskin held the Wolves (30-5) to one hit, struck out 11 and was instrumental in both rallies.
Then in the second game, his two-run double highlighted the big inning.
Chaskin snuck a seeing-eye single to right field to begin the fourth inning. Courtesy runner Aaron Hafer stole second base and scored on Will McCaleb's slow single through the left side.
The Cardinals made it 2-0 in the fifth. Alex Silver smacked a single down the right-field line, Jeremy Schaffer was hit by a pitch and Silver scored when Chaskin dumped an opposite-field single to left.
The Cardinals erased a 1-0 series deficit for the third time in four Saturdays. They trailed against Katy and Alvin in previous weeks, only to win two straight games and advance each time.
Bellaire will play in the state semifinals at either 4 or 7 p.m. Friday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Pairings are expected to be announced Sunday morning.
