The first round of the Houston Golf Association’s junior golf season began Monday afternoon with tournaments all over the Houston area.
Tournaments in west Houston, Montgomery and League City started the three-month schedule for boys and girls ages 13-18 in the area. There are two series for each age group, the Weekly Junior series and the Performance series. The age ranges are boys’ 13-15, boys’ 16-18, girls’ 13-15, and girls’ 16-18.
In the Weekly Junior tournament at Pine Forest Country Club, Christopher Winters of Houston won the boys 16-18 tournament by shooting a 74 on the par-72 course. The Strake Jesuit golfer finished four strokes ahead of second-place finisher Anu Chahar, who shot a 78. Jonathan Cena of Cypress finished third with an 80.
In the Performance division, Katy’s Scott Newell won with a 73, while Taylor Green – also from Katy – finished second with a 75. Jack Swanson of Houston and Zachary Smalls of Katy both shot a 77 and were tied for third place.
