After a rain delay that pushed the start of the game back 45 minutes, the Northwest 5A All-Stars reigned upon their counterparts to the east.
The second game of the Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association’s All-Star week saw the Northwest team beat the Northeast 5A All-Stars 3-1 Tuesday night at Rice’s Reckling Park.
Klein outfielder Jason Mohn got the big hit for the Northwest All-Stars with a two-out, two-RBI double in the second inning, scoring Katy outfielder Joey Fuda and Cinco Ranch infielder Michael Hutchins. An earlier run was scored by Klein Oak infielder Scott Arthur when Fuda beat out a double play attempt.
“I just went up there hacking,” Mohn said. “I was just swinging out of my shoes.”
All seven pitchers for the Northwest team, including Cy-Fair’s David Cardamone, Strake Jesuit’s Jeff McVaney and Morton Ranch’s Matt Steiner, held the Northeast team to only one run and combined for 12 strikeouts.
The Northeast got its run in the top of the seventh inning, when MacArthur catcher Jose Castro doubled home North Shore infielder Jose Nino.
The first game of the day was the 4A-and-under all-star game, in which the South All-Stars beat the North All-Stars 8-4 in a rain-shortened game.
Two more games will take place Wednesday at Reckling, with the Southwest 5A All-Stars against the Southeast 5A All-Stars at 4:30 p.m. and the Junior All-Star game at 7:30 p.m.
