Notebook: Tigers-Mustangs apparently not must-see

A smattering of news and observations from recent days:

No TV for Katy-North Shore?

FSN's recent announcement that Wake Forest-Baylor would headline the opening night of its national Big 12 football package Aug. 28 probably eliminates any chance that the mammoth Katy-North Shore clash scheduled for the next night will be moved for FSN Houston/Southwest coverage. The network, after all, likely wouldn't pre-empt a Texas or Big 12 college for a high school game.

A Thursday game previously appeared likely because neither the Astros nor the Texas Rangers had telecasts scheduled for FSN that night.

That Saturday likely is out, too, because that’s the first Saturday of college football.

Guy still likes Longhorns

Eisenhower defensive tackle Jay Guy shined this weekend in a visit to Texas, and told Scout.com the Longhorns remain the favorite to sign him despite heavy overtures from Florida and national champion LSU.

“I talked to a few of the (Texas) defensive line coaches,” said Guy, a 6-foot-1, 315-pound junior-to-be. “They said they were interested and would be watching me in the fall.”

The Eagles are ranked No. 23 statewide in Dave Campbell Texas Football's 5A poll. They open Aug. 29 at Fort Bend Hightower, then host North Shore in Week One.

Basketball hirings

Two local schools have new boys basketball coaches.

Mayde Creek hired former Carthage coach John Jones, who also was at Brookshire-Royal in 2004. The Rams were 7-18 last year, 4-10 in District 19-5A.

Deon Williams is the new boys basketball coach at Westside. He previously was an assistant; the Wolves went 5-19 overall and 3-13 in 20-5A.

CFISD announces sports physicals

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD high-school athletes have three chances to take summer athletic physicals. Cost is $15 per student.

Locations and times are:

* Cypress Ridge High School, from 9-11 a.m. Aug. 2. Checks can be made payable to Dr. James Fogarty. Call (281) 807-8058 for more information.

* Cypress Springs High School, from 9-10:30 a.m. (girls) and 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (boys) Aug. 2. Only cash will be accepted.

* Jersey Village High School, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 6 in the temporary buildings behind the school near the football field. Checks can be made payable to Dr. David Mark, though cash also will be accepted.

Once, twice, three times ...

Because District 17-5A will be entirely comprised of Katy ISD's six high schools beginning next year for at least two years, the district's baseball schedule will feature three meetings between all district teams.

End notes

Several 7-on-7 teams who already have qualified for the state tournament are in Saturday’s SQT at Lufkin, including Cy-Fair, Chavez and Beaumont West Brook. Other local teams include Oak Ridge, The Woodlands, Kingwood, Klein Collins, New Caney and Sharpstown. Stratford's there, too, trying to redeem itself after failing to qualify so far. They've come close three times, however. … Klein Forest will play Warren (Ohio) Howland in the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. The USA Challenge Aug. 30 in Canton, Ohio.
