Maybe all-star games in other sports are made for scoring, but apparently not baseball.

The Southeast 5A All-Stars edged the Southwest 5A All-Stars 3-1 in eight innings Wednesday night at Reckling Park in the third of four Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association all-star games.

Each has been low-scoring.

“Looking at the rosters it was loaded with pitching … so we figured it’d be close but we have a lot of guys going Division I for positions too,” said Clear Creek’s Jarrod Cosart, a Missouri signee, whose hit keyed the eighth-inning rally before he scored the winning run.

Cosart, who was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 38th round two weeks ago but expects to honor his college commitment, started the rally off Southwest pitcher Ronald Garner of Willowridge with an infield single to shortstop.

Michael Guerra of Alvin singled Cosart to second, Shane Hamaker of Pasadena Memorial walked to load the bases and Cosart scored when Deer Park’s Dalton Schafer drew a walk.

“He (Garner) might have gotten a little tired. He left the ball up and it let us get some key hits,” Cosart said.

The Southwest team, which featured three players from Lamar and two each from Westside and Bellaire, took a 1-0 lead in the first when Westside product Taylor Wall singled in Lamar’s Anthony Rendon, who reached on an error.

The Southeast tied the game in the top of the seventh, scoring the game on a leadoff double and an error. Baytown Sterling's Derek Brooks pounded a double down the left-field line, then scored with one out when Jorge Castillo’s grounder rolled through the first baseman into right field.

Wall, the first of six Southwest pitchers, combined with Kyle Winkler, Goudeau, Kyl Waterwall and Ryan Burnaman to hold the Southeast to three hits through six innings.

Garner singled to center with two outs in the sixth but was stranded.

“Five innings went by and it was 0-0 so we felt good, then the seventh inning came around and things didn’t go our way,” Wall said. “A bad hop here, a hit there so they tie up. We hit a few balls right at them and had a few mishaps on the bases but it was fun.”
