Lamar finishes summer with loss to Westside

Coming off a District 20-5A championship, the Lamar baseball team completed its summer ball season with a 9-7 loss to Westside Monday night at Stratford High School. Summer ball coach Hunter Brown is happy in how the Redskins played in their summer games considering that most of the other varsity players are out on select teams.

“We had a good summer,” he said. “We did a good job of getting kids out here who haven’t played a lot last year some playing time. And that’s what you do in the summer.”

The Redskins won district with a 13-1 record, losing only once to Bellaire. But in the playoffs, the Redskins lost the first game of their Region III quarterfinal series to the Cardinals 11-1, won the second game in extra innings, but fell in the third game of the series 1-0 on a walk-off RBI hit by Sean Washington.

It was a painful loss to Lamar, but it might give the team a lot of motivation heading into the 2009 season. Returning players like pitcher Scott Erzinger and infielder/pitcher Daniel Gonzales will make the Redskins a contender for not only repeating as district champs, but a real threat to make a run at state.
