COLLEGE STATION - The Katy football team found itself fighting for third-place in the consolation bracket Saturday at the state 7-on-7 tournament.
After going 1-2 on Friday, Katy came out strong Saturday morning with nothing to lose and made it to the quarterfinals in the consolation bracket.
“We just made adjustments,” quarterback Parker Ray said. “We were running our routes and not worrying about whether we were winning or losing, just focusing on getting better for the season.”
After taking game 1 against Klein Forest, the Tigers’ defense held Arlington from tying game 2 and got a 34-33 win.
“They fight,” Ray said about his defense. They’ve got a lot of fight in them. They step up when we need them to and that’s really good for us.”
At halftime, the game was tied at 14. Both teams scored three touchdowns in the second half but Katy stopped Arlington from scoring the PAT on their last drive, allowing the Tigers to win.
The next step was the quarterfinal game versus Tomball.
The Tigers had a short-lived lead before Tomball scored five of the game's next six touchdowns and won 40-14.
Seven Lakes went 3-0 on Friday moved to the championship bracket but went home early after losing 46-26 against Tyler Lee.
Tyler Lee led by a touchdown at the half and then scored 26 more points to advance.
Cinco Ranch dropped their first game Saturday to Round Rock Stony Point, ending their time at Texas A&M.
