The Cy-Fair area has been invaded this weekend by some of the top female basketball teams in the country. The 2008 Reebok Cy-Fair Classic High School Elite Tournament started this weekend and with around 70 teams registered and more than 70 college coaches on hand it is sure to be an electric few days.
Each year brings fresh and seasoned talent to the tournament and according to Tournament Director Cedrick Lafleur, “there are going to be a lot of close games but I think it will be on the same level as last year which really brings out the college coaches.”
Coaches from every level will be watching from the stands for girls they have been tracking throughout the season and for new faces that stand out from the crowd. Some of the younger teams have opted to compete with the older girls in order to challenge themselves in this tournament and to put themselves on the college radar. Although Lafleur said the rising gas prices have effected some of the out of state traveling teams, he knows the girls competing are placing themselves on the fast track to continue their basketball careers.
Pool play ended Saturday, and play Saturday night and Sunday will determine the top two teams to play for the championship Sunday. Games are being played at Cypress Woods High School, Cy-Fair High School, Arnold Middle School and Spillane Middle School. For complete tournament details, visit http://www.cyfairtexans.com.
