The Greater Houston Water Polo Jalapeno Championship Tournament at Strake Jesuit has turned into a duel between two top area squads the past two days.

Monday, the Lone Star team from Clear Lake and Dirty Bay from Baytown split the two championships, with Dirty Bay winning the boys 18-and-under championship and Lone Star winning the girls title.

Tuesday, the 16-and-under teams went at it, with both boys and girls teams in the 16-and-under division.

The boys championship went into sudden death overtime, with Dirty Bay erasing a two-goal deficit to beat Lone Star 12-11.

“They showed great composure,” Lone Star coach Andrew Pudwill said. “We have been battling Lone Star in the last two days.”

In overtime, Jared Barrientes scored the game-winning goal two minutes in, his shot from 10 feet away trickling and floating into the net.

“Us and (Lone Star), we’re tough (against each other) in the water,” Barrientes said. “They know us and we know them. It was a hard-fought game. This was the best game I’ve played in about a year.”

There was a lot less drama in the girls championship, as Lone Star beat Dirty Bay 14-7 after holding as much as a seven-goal lead.

The tournament continues Wednesday, as the Division II teams from areas like Brazoswood and Alvin compete. The 18-and-under teams start pool play at 8 a.m. and the 16-and-under teams begin play at 3:30 p.m. Admission at the Strake Jesuit pool is $5.
