It’s the final weeks of the Houston Golf Association’s Junior Golf season, and the competition is heating up just like the July weather.
Area golfers braved the 90-plus-degree weather at Sugar Creek Country Club in Sugar Land on Monday afternoon to try to improve their rankings with two weeks left.
Clear Lake senior Gabrielle McNary won the girls Weekly Series with a score of 86, 14 strokes ahead of second-place Courtney Brooks. McNary, who was part of the Falcon team that won the state championship in 2006, fought through the extreme heat to put up one of the best scores of the day.
“I could have shot a little lower on the front nine, but it’s OK,” McNary said. “I didn’t worry about the sun until the last three holes. It started getting a little hot, but it wasn’t bad.”
In the girls Performance Series, Hillary Wood of Missouri City won by shooting a 78, while Sealy’s Chelsey Watkins was second at 88. Clear Creek’s Jennifer Paden was third with a 93.
In boys action, Fort Bend Dulles junior Joey Rippel won the Performance Series with a 71, three strokes ahead of Cinco Ranch junior Scott Newell. John Turner finished third with a score of 76.
In the Weekly Series, Sugar Land’s Bryan Pfeffer won with a 76, while Angleton’s Michael Paukner and Morgan Wright of Mont Belvieu both shot a 78.
