For those who are anxiously awaiting the start of the 2008 high school football season, the Texas High School Coaches Association on Tuesday night will give you something to hold you over until next month.
The THSCA will present its 2008 All-Star football game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, showcasing some of the top high school prospects the state has to offer, and a final time for these players to represent their high school before heading to college.
The Houston area will be well-represented on the South All-Star team, with 10 players all going to top college programs.
Two of the players, safety Trent Hunter from Katy and center Chuck Obi from Lamar Consolidated, both celebrated winning state championships and will play one more game representing their respective schools. Hunter was a blue-chip recruit that will attend Texas A&M in the fall, while Obi will play at Sam Houston State.
Three other area players on the roster that will be Aggies in the fall are Eisenhower defensive tackle Rod Davis, Pearland center Brian Thomas and Waller running back/defensive tackle Eddie Brown. The only area player that has committed to play at Texas playing for the South is Angleton running back D.J. Monroe.
Clements tight end Walker Dille didn’t think he would be in this position when the season began. But his clutch catches and big-play capability helped the Rangers to an undefeated regular season and a big run in the playoffs, while getting him a scholarship to play at TCU in the fall. Stratford defensive tackle Jimmy Burge used his 6-foot-2, 285-pound frame to help the Spartans win district and do well in the playoffs, and garner him a scholarship to play at Missouri.
Rounding out the area players is Cypress Falls wide receiver Darius Bolden and Cypress Ridge cornerback Royce Hill. Bolden is headed to Texas State, while Hill will play at North Texas.
The coaches are Alamo Heights head coach Don Byrd for the South and Odessa Permian’s Darren Allman for the North.
The game will be broadcast live on FSN Southwest (DirecTV Channel 676) at 7:30 p.m., but not in the Houston area due to a conflict with the Astros-Cincinnati Reds game. The tape-delay broadcast will air on FSN Houston and FSN Southwest at noon Wednesday.
