The St. Johns Mavericks batted a close game against the Second Baptist Lady Eagles in the second day of the Holiday Classic Tournament.  “We both have similar styles of zone defense and walking the ball up the court which equaled similar results in score and fouls” Second Baptist coach Thomas Smith explained.

Maverick’s leading scorers Candice Bailey and Blair Bushen proved to be versatile players as they were able to score from all over the court.  In the second half of the game, the Eagles stepped up on their defense against Bailey and Bushen.  This defensive switch helped the Eagles gain a seven point lead going into the fourth quarter.  With four minutes left in the game the Eagles strived to run the clock while the Mavericks frantically looked for a shot to score.

“Both our freshman, Slaughter and Doughtie played well.  Also, our post Lexy Bennett was open and aggressive, which greatly contributed to our win” Coach Smith commented.   Leslie Slaughter was the Eagle’s leading scorer with ten points.   The final score was 32-29.

The Lady Eagles will face Cornerstone Christian today at 3pm for the Championship.

For the boy’s bracket, the Episcopal School of Dallas fiercely battled the Eagles.  The first half of the game remained close in score as neither team has a decisive lead.  With ten fouls in the second half, Episcopal gave the Eagles valuable free-throw shots in hopes of getting a rebound to have an opportunity to score.

The Eagles landed the victory and a move to the Championship game today at 4:30pm against HCYA.

The final score was 56-48.  Episcopal’s leading scorer was #23 Jeff Georgatos with seventeen points.  For the Eagles, #23 Ryan Maag scored 22 and #31 Rufus Smith scored nineteen.
