The Spring Woods Lady Tigers faced off with the Sam Rayburn Lady Texans Friday afternoon at Spring Woods. The Lady Tigers had a dominating performance over the Texans with excellent shooting and strong defense.
“We knew they beat Northbrook by a good margin,” explained coach Richard Rodriguez “We knew we had to come out and play well.”
Spring Woods defense held the Texans to eight points in the first period with six of the eight made in the last minute of the period by Texan #30 with two back-to-back three pointers.
”We missed some inside shots early,” said Rodriguez. “But made some three pointers to make up for it”.
Going into the second period the Lady Tigers' led 13-8.
“We played good defense,” stated Rodriguez, “which gave us more fast breaks allowing us to make easy baskets.”
In the second period Spring Woods capitalized on turnovers and out shot Sam Rayburn 13-4. Going into the half, Spring Woods led Sam Rayburn 26-12.
Coming out after half time the Lady Tigers pulled away and took the victory. As Coach Rodriguez stated, “It felt good coming out with a 14 point lead, but we told ourselves that we had to come out and play strong defense.”
Captain Arielle Daron explained that “We had good team confidence and we are very comfortable with each other on and off the court.”
After watching the Texans struggle to put points on the board, the Lady Tigers showed no remorse and continued to play tough basketball.
Top scorer for Spring Woods High school was Arielle Daron, who scored 22 points, followed by her teammate Kristin Johnson, who scored 20 points. Both players contributed to the Lady Tigers win with a final score of 52-27 over Sam Rayburn. Top scorer for Sam Rayburn was Charlene Umunnakwe with eight points.
The Lady Tigers will be matching up in district play Tuesday night against the Lady Spartans at Spring Woods High School. Tip off will be at 7:30 p.m.
