Written by Tiffany G. Smith

After three days of competition, the championship games for the Holiday Classic Tournament were played Friday afternoon.

In the girls’ bracket, Cornerstone Christian batted the Second Baptist Lady Eagles for a 33-54 victory.  The first half of the game was close competition as both teams struggled to take a lead.  However, in the second half, Cornerstone Christian steadily began securing a lead through their defensive full court press.  Once Cornerstone switched to man defense, the Eagles’ outside scoring slowed down as they took time to readjust their offensive attack.

The tournament MVP was Cornerstone Christian’s Chelsea Jones.  Jones was also the game’s leading scorer with twenty-four points.  The Second Baptist all tournament team players were: Mallory Dixon and Kendall Shanklin.

For the boys’ bracket, HCYA faced the Second Baptist Eagles for the championship.  Until the fourth quarter the game remained rather close. HCYA won with a final score of 52-66.

All tournament team athletes were: John Sanders (HCYA), Josh Decker (HCYA), Rufus Smith (Second Baptist) and Tripp Pruet (Second Baptist). The tournament MVP was HCYA’s Jesse Sanders.

HCYA leading scorers were Jesse Sanders with 22 points, and John Sanders with 16 points.

For the Eagles, Tripp Pruet proved a tremendous asset as he was open inside the lane and had countless crucial rebounds.  In addition, Rufus Smith tried to help the Eagles in their come back attempt as he landed 23 points for the game.

Congratulations to both Cornerstone Christian and HCYA for their tournament victories.
